UPDATED: New locations, familiar feel for Pictou students
Note: On Thursday, Sept. 28 we posted an article to our website regarding updates at Pictou Academy and the McCulloch Education Centre. Regretfully there was an error in the article regarding the status of a science lab at Pictou Academy. The error has been addressed in the updated article below. We apologize for the error and the confusion it caused.
Over the summer and into the fall, Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) staff have been hard at work getting schools ready for students in the Town of Pictou.
The former Dr. Thomas McCulloch School is now housing Grades 9-12 under the historic Pictou Academy name. With the building now housing high school students, a number of updates had to be made.
Some of the work to the newly-minted Pictou Academy included:
•Moving furniture and classroom supplies into updated Pictou Academy.
•Special painting of ceiling tiles to improve fire safety.
•Replacing ceiling tiles.
•Painting hallways, including trim and doors, converting to traditional Pictou Academy colours.
•Re-labelling doors and classrooms.
•Converting former paper storage rooms to house technology and science equipment.
•Regular summer cleanup such as re-waxing classroom floors.
Science lab equipment was transferred from the former Pictou Academy building to the school’s new location. Setup of the lab has not yet been completed, however a definitive timeframe on when this work will be finalized should be available shortly.
Once completed, the science lab will meet the needs of high school students as required in the Public School Program.
In addition to the changes at Pictou Academy, the former Pictou Elementary School was converted into a Primary to Grade 8 school. With this change came a new name: McCulloch Education Centre.
A number of people showed up to watch the new name go up on the building over the summer, as a new chapter in education began for Pictou students.
After a lot of work, some of which is still ongoing, the result is a pair of updated facilities with a familiar feel for students and staff.
